ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — About two weeks before he died, Calvin Kenny posted — or someone posted for him — a photo and public note on his Facebook page.

The photo appeared to be of him and two other men in prison, and the message was an effort to find his friend a pen pal.

“The guy with the face tattoos on my left is my friend Brandon Colford,” the note read. “He’s 22 years old and he’s in the max with me right now. He’s a good guy, loyal as f--- and he wants a pretty girl to talk to.”

This week, police said they have charged 23-year-old Atlantic Institution inmate Brandon Blake Colford of Blackville, N.B., with Kenny’s murder.

Kenny, 27, and a native of Fermeuse, was found severely injured in his cell in the Renous prison, north of Moncton, the morning of Feb. 18. He was taken to the infirmary, where he was pronounced dead.

New Brunswick RCMP said shortly afterward it was investigating Kenny’s death as a homicide.

Colford was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder. He remains incarcerated and will appear in court at a later date.

At the time of his death, Kenny was serving a 12 1/2-year manslaughter sentence for the July 2016 killing of 25-year-old Steven Miller of C.B.S. Miller had been kidnapped from his home in the middle of the night — and the house was then set on fire — before his body was found stabbed and beaten in a residential driveway in Kelligrews hours later. Four men were charged in connection with Miller’s death.
