There will be a father and son team heading to the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Council meetings. Ivan J. White of St. George’s will join his dad Ivan White of Flat Bay.

White won the seat for the St. George’s ward in Tuesday’s election against Kenneth Lee. His dad was already acclaimed for the Flat Bay ward.

White Jr. will fill the seat formerly occupied by Arlene Blanchard-White, who didn’t seek election this time around.

“I think it’s excellent and I’m very happy to get on the band council. I tip my hat to Kenny (Lee) for stepping forward,” he said.

He said he will be doing his best to try and keep up with what Blanchard-White did and noted the reason he ran was due to her giving him that last push and keeping him in the loop.

One of the things that he will be tackling will be a change to the demographics of the band as he would like to see more young people involved. He said the majority of the band council members are over 40 years of age and he’s the youngest at 35 years old.

He wants to get down to work and look into the bylaws, terms of reference and the legislation of Qalipu, as those are all things he has an interest in.

White lives in St. George’s with his wife Crystal, eight-year-old daughter Isabella and five-year-old son Ivan.
