MAINLAND, N.L. — Zita Hinks said after pushing so hard to raise money, it's disappointing and discouraging a tower to provide cellular service in Mainland and Three Rock Cove is on hold.
The community completed fundraising $80,000 in June as its portion towards the cellular service.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Francophone Economic Development Network (RDÉE TNL) said last week it continues to work with Bell Mobility and the provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation to install what’s known as SimpleCell infrastructure in Three Rock Cove.
The hold up is an application submitted to Crown Lands to obtain the land required to supply the Mainland and Three Rock Cover coverage area.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Francophone Economic Development Network, which headed up the fundraising project, said it has been informed this process has a different completion time versus the initial option to lease the land.
Hinks is hoping the process is completed sooner rather than later, as community residents are anxious to see cell service happen after raising its cost share in such a short period of time.
“There’s nothing we can do, our hands are tied,” she said on behalf of the committee. “I’m heartbroken. I thought it would happen faster.”
The good news is reassurance it has the money necessary to the project happen. Now they will see what they can do as a committee to move the process forward.
The Francophone Development Network said it would release any further information as soon as it becomes available.
