LOURDES, N.L. — A 29-year-old woman has been sent to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s with serious injuries and
a 30-year-old Lourdes man has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm following an accident near Abraham's Cove Thursday morning.
Cpl. John Butler of the Bay St. George RCMP said an officer from the detachment came upon the single vehicle accident at 8:29 a.m.
A car had just left the roadway between the Department of Transportation and Works Depot in Abraham’s Cove and Piccadilly Crossroads.
The driver, Aloysuis Young, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Bay St. George detachment where he provided breath samples police allege were nearly twice the legal limit.
The woman was taken to Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville with life-threatening injuries and was to be transported to St. John’s later in the day.
Young appeared in provincial court Thursday afternoon, charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm; driving with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit; dangerous driving causing bodily harm; criminal negligence causing bodily harm; resisting arrest; and taking a motor vehicle without consent.
He also faces two charges under the Highway Traffic Act, including unlawfully operating a vehicle without a license and operating an uninsured vehicle on a highway.
Young is expected back in court on Friday.
