A Bay of Islands man has been charged with several offences after police responded to a report of a vehicle off the road in the Gillams area early Wednesday morning.

The Corner Brook detachment of the RCMP responded to the anonymous tip, which had indicated the driver might be impaired, at around 2:10 a.m.

The 45-year-old driver was located after police attended the scene. He was suspected to be impaired and was arrested.

A breath demand was issued by police, but the man refused to provide samples of his breath.

He was held in custody and searched before being lodged in a holding cell. Police located a white powder believed to be a controlled substance in his possession.

The man was later released from custody after being charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide breath samples and possession of a controlled substance.

He is set to attend court Aug. 20.
