CORNER BROOK, N.L. —

Moose hunting will open in zone one of Gros Morne National Park on Saturday.
The zone is limited to backcountry areas, greater than two kilometres from park highways.
It is one of three hunting zones the park identified as locations for its moose population reduction program.
The program was started in 2011 as part of a broader initiative to improve forest health impacted by over-browsing, the park said a press release.
The program is managed in cooperation with the provincial government, using the province’s big-game licensing system.
Zone two, which includes the majority of areas open to hunting and is accessible by road, opens on Oct. 19. Zone three, which surrounds Killdevil Camp and areas adjacent to frequently used park trails, opens on Nov. 16. There is no hunting in zone four.
The opening dates and zone locations are posted at trail heads, available on the park’s website and included in packages sent to hunters.
There are several construction projects ongoing in the park and hunting is not permitted within one kilometre of construction zones.
The hunting season runs until Jan. 26, 2020.
