People in Mount Pearl and across the province are still dealing with the shock of the sudden death of the man who died as a result of an accident near Terra Nova over the weekend.
Keith Hendry — whose body was found Monday, a day and a half after the pickup truck he had been in with three others plunged from a wooden bridge into the water of Lake St. John — is being mourned by many who knew and loved him.
The 37-year-old is being remembered as a tireless volunteer, a devoted family man and genuinely nice person.
He was particularly well known in the sports community in Mount Pearl, where he grew up playing hockey and coached minor hockey and minor baseball.
“It’s a tough one to take,” Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association president Trevor Murphy told The Telegram Tuesday.
“When I heard the news, there was a big knot in my stomach and my heart just sank. We’re a close-knit community, so many people will miss him.
“He was good with the kids and he was very well respected. It’s a big loss. Our thoughts are with his family.”
While members of Hendry’s family chose not to comment, condolences from many people have been pouring in, including from people who worked with and alongside him.
In a Facebook post Tuesday, Hindy’s Home Hardware in Carbonear posted, “It is with great sadness that we send condolences to the family of Keith Hendry. Keith has been our Goodfellow (Inc.) representative for many years and we will miss his visits. A great guy with a friendly smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, two boys, family and friends. Rest in peace Keith.”
Hendry leaves to mourn his wife, Tammy, and two sons, along with other family and friends. He is resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Commonwealth Avenue in Mount Pearl on Friday. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Gower Street United Church.
