It looks like Newfoundland and Labrador will have its election date before the end of the day.

House of Assembly Speaker Perry Trimper arrived at Government House at around 11:30 a.m. In brief remarks before entering, the Speaker says there are “bills that need Royal Assent today.”

Royal assent is given to all bills passed at the end of a legislative sitting. With the legislature potentially closing today, the election call is likely coming very soon.

Trimper says he got Royal Assent for three bills that passed third reading this morning, but ultimately he says he cannot say for sure if the election will be called today.

That’s up to the Premier, who has an announcement at noon.

Other reports of the election date on May 15 appear to have been miscalculated. According to Elections NL, the Election date could be as early as May 16 and as late as May 23, if the Writ of Election is indeed dropped today.

The deadline for candidates to officially register with Elections NL is April 25.

More details will be provided as they become available.
