ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The federal government has delivered the first of two instalments of the Gas Tax Fund (GTF) to Newfoundland and Labrador for 2018-19.
It will see $16.4 million in funding flow through the provincial government to 271 municipalities and five Inuit community governments on a per capita basis.
The GTF is a long-term, indexed source of funding that supports local infrastructure projects across the province each year.
"Through Federal-Provincial cooperation on this fund we are continuing to enhance vital infrastructure, and ensure safe and sustainable communities across Newfoundland and Labrador,” Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons said in a release.
There are 18 project categories eligible for funding under the program.
The funds can be used immediately for priority projects, they can be banked to be used later, it can be pooled with other communities for shared infrastructure projects or the money can be put towards financing major infrastructure expenditures.
In total, the GTF will provide over $32.8 million this year for local infrastructure projects.
