ST. JOHN’S, NL – Forty-eight communities in Newfoundland and Labrador will see improvements to their infrastructure this year as part of a $10.6 million investment by the provincial government through its three-year Municipal Capital Works program.
Premier Dwight Ball made the announcement on Wednesday, March 21, along with Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador president Tony Keats and Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador executive director Jim Organ.
The projects – which include water and wastewater systems, roads, and community-oriented infrastructure – will be cost-shared with the municipalities kicking in over $4 million in funding, according to a news release.
Ball also announced $18.8 million in provincial funding is being committed to leverage an additional $12.7 million in federal funding under the multi-year Small Communities Fund of the New Building Canada Fund.
As well, the release stated the provincial government continues to work with the federal government on the details of the second phase of the Investing in Canada Plan.
Some $555.9 million over 10 years has been allocated to Newfoundland and Labrador for cost-shared projects under that program.
“The significant investments in municipal infrastructure announced today will provide a better quality of life for residents,” Ball said.
“These projects will create jobs, increase tourism, and build on our economic foundation. Through these investments, we are creating incentives for people live in, and visit the beautiful and unique communities of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
