You can forgive Chris Tibbs if he wants to spend the Victoria Day long weekend basking in the glow of his election victory.
The 42-year-old from Grand Falls-Windsor defeated incumbent Liberal and cabinet minister Al Hawkins in the 2019 Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Election on May 16.
While he will be taking the weekend to process his victory and spend time with his family, Tibbs doesn't plan on taking too much time off before getting to work in his new gig.
Monday morning he plans on hitting the streets in the district again to knock on doors and thank everyone who voted for him.
That is fine, but what about those who didn't vote in his favour?
Well, Tibbs plans to speak to them too, assuring them he'll give them reason to believe in the work he is going to do.
Surrounded by supporters and family members at Lefty's Pizzeria in Grand Falls-Windsor, Tibbs had a hard time containing his excitement.
There were balloons and cake as people stood shoulder-to-shoulder celebrating the victory.
The first-time politician has good reason for the high spirits.
Tibbs secured 2,935 total votes to Hawkins' 2,586 as 60 per cent of voters in their district turned out to the polls.
He complimented Hawkins on running a great race and thanked him for being such a strong individual in the district in both his public and private life.
With that said, Tibbs felt it was his passion that lead people to put their faith in him at the ballot box.
"I've always put others above myself and I think that is something missing from politics now," he said.
Attempts to reach Hawkins for comment prior to deadline were unsuccessful.
