RCMP in Sheshatshiu arrested a 13-year-old boy on May 23 in relation to a threat the youth allegedly made on social media to Sheshatshiu Innu School and Lake Melville School.

Police were notified of the alleged threat at 9 a.m. by Lake Melville School, and both schools were put in secure mode following the incident for about an hour until the young man was located.

Glenda Power, director of strategic communications with the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador, said in any situation involving a threat to a school the police take it very seriously.

“I understand this particular investigation showed there was no threat to either of the schools, but it's something that needs to be investigated and taken seriously,” she told The Labradorian.

She said in Newfoundland and Labrador we are lucky to live in a fairly safe province and don’t have the same issues that are seen in other places involving threats to schools and potential shootings but it doesn’t make the threat any less serious.

According to a release from the RCMP the youth has been released to his guardian with conditions, and is scheduled to appear in court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay in July.
