One man dead in fatal South River house fire

SOUTH RIVER, NL - One man is dead following a house fire in South River Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Brent Hillier confirmed at the scene that a 55-year-old man died in the fire. He was the lone occupant of a single-storey home on Salmon Cove Road.

There was considerable damage to the house. Bay Roberts RCMP was called to the scene 7:15 a.m. Members of the Bay de Grave Volunteer Fire Department were already responding to the fire at that time.

The cause of the fire and its area of origin were unknown as of Tuesday morning. The Bay Roberts Volunteer Fire Department was called in to assist the Bay de Grave crew. Firefighters and police remained on the scene as of 10 a.m., and traffic is blocked in the area where emergency responders are present.
