CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The Fish Food and Allied Workers’ union will soon find out who will be representing seven regions up for grabs on its inshore council.
The union representing fishing industry workers holds elections for its inshore council every three years.
The council consists of between 25 and 30 harvesters, with all members of the executive board being members of the council. The elections are held for 18 regional seats, along with specific seats available for young harvesters, crew members and women harvesters.
The nomination period closed in February and ballots have been mailed out for all seats that have more than one candidate. The deadline to return ballots is April 4 and the votes will be counted shortly after that.
Voting is open to all inshore members in good standing. Harvesters in good standing vote for the candidates within their designated geographical areas.
This year, there are seven regional seats being contested, including the Highlands to Cox’s Cove in western Newfoundland.
The contested positions and the interested candidates are:
- Highlands to Cox’s Cove: Darren Boland and Tracy Hickey
- Cape St. John to North Head: Randy Randell and Robert Robinson
- St. Brides to Swift Current: Brian Careen and Kevin McGrath
- Gander Bay to Cape Freels, including Fogo and Change Islands: Basil Goodyear and Aubrey Brinson
- Newtown to Elliston: Dennis Chaulk and Gerard Hounsell
- Harbour Grace to Cape St. Francis: Rodney Mercer and Matthew Petten
- Henley Harbour to Cartwright: Alton Rumbolt and Harrison Campbell
