A police firearm magazine containing twelve rounds was lost this week while officers tracked suspects in a east-end St. John’s break and enter.
On Wednesday, just before midnight, patrol officers, forensic identification and the canine unit responded to a home and were told the home security alarm had woken the residents, who then realized their property had been stolen.
The canine unit — dog, handler and a patrol officer began following a track starting near the Trans Canada Highway access ramp on Logy Bay Road, ending about one and a half hours later in the Wedgewood Park area. They passed through people’s yards, wooded areas and wetlands, but had no luck.
Police say the dog, handler and officer searched through many residential yards, wooded areas and wetlands.
Afterwards, the patrol officer realized a magazine, containing 12 40-calibre rounds, had been dislodged from their duty belt.
Officers retraced the track of the police service dog, but couldn’t find the magazine.
