STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — Update:
STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — Timothy Hackett, the escapee from West Coast Correctional Centre in Stephenville on Thursday, was apprehended by police dog Axel at a home in Stephenville early Friday.
According to a prepared release from the RCMP, his arrest took place about 12:30 a.m. following his escape from the correctional centre at about 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The RCMP said police officers from Bay St. George detachment and General Investigation Section, along with RCMP Police Dog Services, searched for Hackett. Police Dog Services tracked the suspect from the correctional centre, across a body of water and lost the track in the town of Stephenville.
Officers continued the investigation, which led them to a residence on Poplar Drive in Stephenville where they surrounded the residence.
A negotiator with the RCMP contacted a woman inside the residence, who surrendered herself to police and was arrested for obstruction.
Officers, police dog Axel and his handler, then entered the residence.
After his apprehension by Axel, Hackett was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
This is the second time Hackett was apprehended by an RCMP service dog. During a car-jacking incident Sept. 17 in Clarenville, Hackett assaulted an elderly lady, stole her vehicle and fled from police.
He was later located hiding in the woods on the Burin Peninsula by police dog Grinch and was taken into custody.
Hackett, who is from English Harbour East, attended court on Thursday facing a charge of escaping lawful custody.
He remains in custody and has his next court appearance in Stephenville on Nov. 28.
