CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The new hospital will bring an additional 130 long-term care beds, says Premier Tom Marshall.
The premier revealed the number during an interview with The Western Star last week.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health said the functional plan is nearing completion and is expected to be released soon.
The plan will address specifics to the operational design of the new hospital, programming and project scope.
Completion of the design for the long-term care and central utility facilities is expected in early 2015, with construction set to begin later that year.
The design for the acute-care hospital, the hostel and hostel facilities is expected in fall 2015, and construction set for 2016.
Site preparation is underway at the site. To prepare for construction, Marine Contractors was awarded a $3.9 million contract for site excavation and grading. Brook Construction is doing the underground concrete water reservoir — a $2.9 million job.
Last month, contracts totalling $17 million to support the development of the new regional hospital and long-term care facility was announced.
Of that, $10.7 million was awarded to the Corner Brook Care Team for design purposes.
The remaining nearly $7 million was for site preparation.
