The 2018 Purple Ribbon campaign to raise awareness about violence against women got underway in the main lobby of the Confederation Building on Friday morning with speeches, a proclamation signing and the raising of a Purple Ribbon Flag.
The creation of the Purple Ribbon Flag was made possible by the advocacy work of Debbie and Phillip Hibbs, whose daughter, Juliane Hibbs, and her fiancé, Vince Dillon, were murdered by Hibbs’ ex-partner at a medical clinic in Manuels, C.B.S., on Oct. 15, 2013.
Supported through the province’s Violence Prevention Initiative, the campaign runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, coinciding with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.
It also includes two significant dates in the history of violence against women: Nov. 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The flag will also fly outside the Confederation Building on the courtesy flag pole, located just west of the main entrance, until Dec. 6.
