The trial of a man charged in connection with a vehicle crash that left his ex-girlfriend paralyzed will not continue until the new year, and likely not until the spring.
The Crown reportedly had two witnesses left to call to the stand in its case against Joshua Steele-Young, 23, at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John's, and had been expected to wrap up this week, handing the case over to the defence.
However, the trial was postponed Thursday due to a medical issue of one of the lawyers. The matter will be called again in the middle of January, when a date will be set for the continuation of proceedings.
Steele-Young has pleaded not guilty to charges of forcible confinement and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in relation to the crash, which happened on Pitts Memorial Drive on March 20, 2017.
The court has heard testimony from a number of witnesses so far, including Morgan Pardy, Steele-Young's ex-girlfriend and passenger in his Honda Civic when it crashed and rolled.
Pardy told the court she had ended her five-month relationship with Steele-Young days earlier, but had agreed to go for a drive with him that morning to talk. The pair began to argue, she said, and Steele-Young grew angry. Pardy said she undid her seatbelt and demanded he let her out of the car, but he didn't.
When the car crashed, Pardy was ejected through the passenger window. She is paralyzed from the chest down as a result.
Collision analysts with the RNC determined the vehicle was travelling at a speed of 130 km/h in snowy conditions when it left the road.
