Trout season opens today for insular Newfoundland

The handsome trout lying atop the basket was caught by Gus Cochrane (grandfather of four, father of two and son of the late A.M.). Gus makes the point that his wife, Michelle (nee Scott), rather than go through married life as a trouting widow, joined in and has since become her husband’s “best trouting buddy.” — Submitted photo

A day many people in Newfoundland look forward each year has finally arrived.

It’s time to break out the rods and reels and hit the ponds and brooks to catch a few trout.

The daily bag limit (includes speckled trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and ouananiche) is 12 trout or 2.25 kilograms plus one trout, round weight. The possession limit is twice the daily bag limit.

Special trout management areas opening today include Indian Bay Watershed, Northwest Brook Watershed, Middle Brook Watershed and Jonathan's Brook Watershed.

Special trout management areas opening on June 1 include Southwest Pond, Otter Pond, Coaker's Steady, Star Lake, Adies Lake, 10 Mile Lake (Northern Peninsula) and Round Lake (Northern Peninsula).

The season closes on Sept. 7.
