In separate incidents, two snowmobile operators were charged for impaired driving on the Port au Port Peninsula during the weekend.

In a prepared release, police said it was on Saturday at about 2:30 a.m. Bay St. George RCMP members were patrolling the Port au Port Peninsula when they stopped a snowmobile in West Bay near Piccadilly.

A 28-year-old man from Ontario was arrested for impaired driving after providing breath samples of nearly three times the legal limit. The man was released from custody on the weekend on a promise to appear in Stephenville Provincial Court on Feb. 19.

On New Year’s Eve at about 11 p.m., officers were patrolling Piccadilly when they attempted to stop a snowmobile being driven on the road.

A 50-year-old Piccadilly man was arrested for impaired driving and was also charged with two counts of obstruction for attempting to flee the traffic stop and misleading the police.

The man was held in custody due to having two previous convictions for impaired driving, an outstanding impaired driving charge and an arrest warrant from another province.

He was released by the court on Tuesday and is set to appear in Stephenville Provincial Court on Jan. 22.
