CORNER BROOK The tail end of Tropical Storm Gabrielle didn't pack much of a punch, but it had enough strength to force the cancellation of the regatta planned by the Humber Valley Rowing Club for Saturday.
When rowers tried to put the boats in the water at the club's wharf in Brake's Cove at the mouth of the Humber River, conditions were too windy and wavy to do so safely.
The club had hoped to try to launch its regatta again Sunday morning, but those plans have now also been scuttled.
"We are not planning on rescheduling it because there are a few teams that can't make it," said Mandi Hulan, president of the Humber Valley Rowing Club.
Hulan said it is getting too late in the year to reschedule another regatta this season.
"it's getting too cold out now to postpone it," she said. "If we held it in August, we could have postponed it for another weekend."
