Lecuyer, 37, was dressed in a suit and tie when he appeared for sentencing before Judge Catherine Allen-Westby in provincial court in Corner Brook in the morning.
The assault occurred as a result of a drug deal gone bad on Oct. 9, 2016.
During his trial the court heard that the man and a woman went to Lecuyer’s home to buy cocaine for people they were partying with. While there Lecuyer became agitated and demanded to see the money before handing over the drugs, and then hit the man causing him to fall to the floor.
He was arrested a few days later and has been in custody ever since.
Lecuyer was charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and two counts of failure to comply with a court order.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges and went on trial in late February and early March. He was found guilty on April 28. Following his trial he also pled guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled drug or substance.
In her written decision, which she read in court, Allen-Westby said Lecuyer’s presentence report references a long-term addiction to cocaine and that he has not dealt with that addiction.
According to his lawyer, Shelley Senior, Lecuyer has plans to relocate to Halifax once he’s released, seek work on the docks and pursue a course in small engine repair.
Allen-Westby also ordered Lecuyer to serve two-years probation, to begin at the completion of his sentence and to attend any counseling recommended by his supervisor. She also issued a five-year firearms prohibition and ordered him to provide a sample of his DNA.
Allen-Westby said at 37 Lecuyer is still in a position to get his life on track.
