WABUSH, N.L. — A passion for her community is what prompted Tina Eastman to enter the political arena.
Eastman was born and raised in Wabush but had moved away for about five years. She moved back to Wabush about a three years ago and, when a seat became available on town council a short while ago, she decided she would step forward. She recently won the seat and was sworn in as Wabush's newest councillor.
“When I moved back, I realized some of the things that I enjoyed growing up were no longer available to young people the way they were when I was young," she explained.
"I decided then I would run with the idea that I would try to make changes to get some of the things back."
She points to the recent temporary closure of the Wabush pool, which was down for several months, saying that it was sorely missed by the community. It is now open and events like family swims are back on the agenda. But there are other problems, too. She says the tennis courts are no longer in existence and one of the ball fields isn’t operational.
Eastman says she would like to see more programs for young people in the community and hopes her own son will have the same types of opportunities she did while growing up.
"I would like to see the summer program restored to the way it was years ago," she says, adding that she would also like to see some sort of a music program for young people.
"It is important for people have their voices heard, and I know from experience that speaking out can make a difference," she added.
She also says there is a need for programs for seniors as well.
Eastman says there is a need for more volunteers and she is hoping to encourage people to get out and help.
Meanwhile, there is lots to learn to become an effective councillor, she says, but Eastman believes she's ready for the challenge and encourages community residents to reach out to her with any concerns they have.
