A Corner Brook man who became verbally aggressive after being denied bail has been charged with threatening the provincial court judge who ordered him to remain in custody.

Michael Oxford, 56, was denied bail by Judge Kymil Howe last Thursday. Frustrated by the decision, Oxford began shouting and was ordered removed from the courtroom.

As he was being led back to the cells by sheriff’s officers, authorities say Oxford could be heard uttering threats, including one to kill Howe. The judge indicated in open court she would be notifying the police about what had just occurred.

According to documents filed by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary on Monday, Oxford now has five new charges against him. They include uttering a threat against Howe and threatening to use violence with the intention of provoking a state of fear in Howe, in order to impede her in the administration of justice.

The information filed with the court states that Oxford’s threats consisted of saying “I’m going to f*** you and kill you.”

The other three charges are for breaching an undertaking, a recognizance and a probation order.

Oxford was brought before a judge again Monday. The Crown opposed releasing him and Oxford waived his right to a bail hearing on the latest charges as he was already remanded into custody by Howe.

The most recent charges were scheduled to be called again Oct. 30, the same day Oxford is already set to appear on the 19 other charges against him. Those charges include a raft of court order breaches.
Oxford’s lengthy criminal record is littered with violations of various court orders and his persistent disregard of court orders was one of the reasons why Howe had denied him bail last week.
