A flurry of motor-vehicle collisions in snowy conditions Saturday afternoon caused damage to at least ten vehicles and one man was detained by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary at one scene.
Two vehicles went off the Brier Avenue ramp westbound to Mount Pearl, with one of them overturning in the ditch early Saturday afternoon. The RNC closed the ramp until the two vehicles could be removed.
A second two-vehicle crash on Old Broad Cove Road in Portugal Cove saw a pickup sideswipe a car on slippery roads, leaving the road blocked until the scene could be cleared.
A third two-vehicle collision on Topsail Road in Mount Pearl happened when a pickup truck apparently fishtailed and crashed into an SUV near Mary Queen of the World school.
A fourth incident in Torbay on Torbay Road saw the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department respond to the scene near the Irving station.
Poor road conditions were thought to have been a factor in all four of the incidents and there were no serious injuries in either collision.
In a fifth collision on Hamilton Avenue near Brine Street, a pickup apparently crossed into traffic and collided with a car. The male driver of the pickup was detained by police on scene and both vehicles were extensively damaged. The man was later charged with impaired driving and refusing the breathalyzer.
There were no injuries in that incident.
