BONAVISTA, NL – The federal government estimates a new employment insurance (EI) pilot project will assist roughly 9,500 workers in seasonal industries in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Approximately $189 million is being invested in the project, which will provide up to five additional weeks of EI support to eligible workers in seasonal industries.
The additional five weeks of benefits will be available to eligible workers who start a benefit period between Aug. 5, 2018 and May 30, 2020.
As well, $41 million is being provided over two years to work with all provinces and territories through Labour Market Development Agreements (LMDAs) to provide skills training, wage subsidies and employment supports for workers in seasonal industries.
“I know the initiatives we've announced today will have a positive impact for workers in seasonal industries right here in Newfoundland and Labrador and across the country,” Bonavista–Burin–Trinity MP Churence Rogers said in a release from Employment and Social Development Canada.
