CLARENVILLE, NL – For many people, it's been a Newfoundland winter that only comes in their wildest dreams: mild temperatures, sunshine and no snow in sight.
But for outdoor enthusiasts and those in the snow business, mild temperatures and heavy rain mean trouble – and no skiing at White Hills Resort in Clarenville.
“Essentially , we are set up and ready to go as soon as we have snow,” said White Hills resort manager Chris Sheppard.
“We're monitoring the weather and as soon as the conditions turn around and we're able to open, we will open at that time.”
The hills are currently closed until winter weather conditions necessary for snowmaking improve.
But Sheppard, who took on the job of resort manager in November, says there are still plenty of activities to enjoy at the resort that don’t require snow.
“My plan from the beginning was to host more events, have more community involvement, and have a more welcome atmosphere for everyone in the community to come take a part in some aspect of White Hills,” said Sheppard.
Some of those upcoming events include a family day on Feb. 14, a coffee house event with local entertainment and performers on Feb. 16, and Brewtine, a beer and poutine festival on Feb. 17.
For season pass owners eager to hit the slopes, Sheppard is optimistic conditions will improve, and that it's too early to discuss reimbursements.
“Our focus right now has been on the weather, and the plan is to open the hill at some point. That's really our focus,” said Shepperd, noting the hills typically don’t close until after Easter.
“We're staying positive that seasons pass owners will have access to the hill at some point.”
Weather permitting, of course.
