A wildfire is burning south of the Town of High Level.

While there’s no imminent threat to the town, Alberta Emergency Alert issued an information alert about the fire Sunday afternoon.

The alert said the fire is burning west of Highway 35 and south of Highway 58. It is heading northwest, and smoke from the blaze is visible from town.

Neither the town nor the nearby Norbord manufacturing plant were under immediate threat at the time of the alert, which was issued just after 1 p.m.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant, review their family emergency procedures and keep an eye on the municipality’s Facebook page for updates.

The town said Saturday afternoon that Highway 35 south was blocked due to fire activity.

“If evacuation is required, Highway 88 would be a safe route from the hazard area,” the alert states.

High Level is about 740 km northwest of Edmonton and has a population of around 3,000.
