A pedestrian is lucky to be alive following a hit-and-run incident Sunday night after he was struck by an SUV and thrown several metres into a second vehicle.

An official on scene told The Telegram the 30-year-old man was crossing Blackmarsh Road at Columbus Drive on a crosswalk when a black SUV four-wheel-drive turned onto Blackmarsh from Columbus Drive, striking the pedestrian and throwing him about four metres into another SUV stopped at the red light. The black vehicle stopped for a few moments about fifty metres down Blackmarsh Road before it sped off.

The impact caused significant damage to the stopped SUV and left the victim lying on the pavement before he was taken to hospital. The man’s injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening.

Police closed the intersection at the crosswalk as accident investigation officers documented the scene. They say the hit vehicle, a black four-wheel-drive SUV, would have significant damage to its front end.

Anyone having information that might lead to the identification of the driver is asked to call the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
