ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The 65-year-old female driver who crashed her car in a font yard in St. John's on Sunday night later blew three times over the legal limit when her blood alcohol level was tested by police.

The woman, who was also on court orders not to consume alcohol, was held for a court appearance on Monday morning.

EARLIER STORY

Residents of a quiet residential street in St. John’s were startled from their homes when a car crashed into a front yard and overturned back onto the street Sunday night.

Reports from the scene indicate the female driver then apparently fled the scene on foot, only to be apprehended a short distance away minutes later.

The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Smith Avenue in the center part of the capital city and left a front step and retaining wall with extensive damage.

The car was also heavily damaged as it lay upside-down in the street.

One local resident said the incident could have been worse as a nearby church had just emptied a short time before the incident happened, with dozens of people leaving the building.

More details will be provided as they become available.
