The Center for Music on Summit has been selected as one of this year’s recipients to receive grant funding through the TD MusiCounts Community Music program.
This national organization provides funding which supports community and school music programs. The Center for Music on Summit will use the funding to purchase new musical instruments and equipment for group music education classes, workshops, and performances. Orff & Suzuki xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and a variety of rhythmic and percussive instruments will be utilized in upcoming fall programs.
The Center for Music on Summit will be offering introductory “Creating Music Together” group classes to the community. They will take place over an eight-week period.
“This is a pilot program which we are very excited about developing at Summit,” said Jan Keefe assistant director of the Centre for Music on Summit. “When we planned the program, we took into consideration the rich tapestry of musical roots in this community, and the infusion of new immigrants coming into our area. Our exploration and creative inspiration from all styles and genres of music will provide an innovative musical journey into this universal language.”
Programs begin in mid-October with afterschool classes on Mondays from 3:15 to 4 p.m. for 6 to 8 year olds and 4:15 to 5 p.m. for 9 to 12 year olds. Fees will be kept to a minimum so young people who may not have had the opportunity to take formal lessons can come to experience and explore making music together in a fun and inviting environment, Keefe said. Plans are also in the works for adult and senior programs.
In addition to these new programs, The Center for Music on Summit offers private instruction in piano, fiddle, voice, guitar, ukulele, and Early Childhood Music Programs.
