For the 34th year, North West River hosted its annual Beach Festival. Despite some harsh weather and shortage of volunteers, the event got another great turnout of people who wanted to listen to live music, play games, and eat food from local vendors.

“The weather was fighting against us at times and although we were low on volunteers, we were able to pull it off,” said Beach Festival committee co-chair Mckenzie Hutchings. “At times it felt as though we were just scraping by, but we had a wonderful turn out, a wonderful headliner (Lloyd Snow) and the happiest people in all of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Organizing the two-day event, which took place July 27-28, was no short task. The eight committee members logged long hours starting months ago. It also required recruiting a lot of volunteers and sponsorship money.

“There were hundreds of hours, 50ish volunteers, tens of thousands in sponsoring, and eight committee members,” Hutchings said while summarizing the amount of work that went into the 2019 Beach Festival.

Fifty volunteers sounds like a lot to have for an event, but Hutchings said, ideally, they would have double that number. The committee is encouraging people to already consider volunteering for the 2020 edition of the festival.

“It's never to early to volunteer, we desperately need more volunteers.”
