MARYSTOWN, N.L. — Not-for-profits who help tidy up Marystown during next month’s cleanup week will not only be doing a service to their community, it’ll also help them raise some money for their own coffers.
During the protection to persons and property committee report at Marystown council’s meeting on Tuesday, May 7, approval was given to establish an anti-littering campaign as part of the town’s annual cleanup week, being held this year from June 1-8.
A budget of $2,500 for the program was also approved with the money to come from unallocated funds in the 2019 budget.
According to committee co-chair, Coun. Mike Brennan, organizations, which will be required to pre-register, will receive money for each bag of garbage collected during the campaign.
As of the May 7 meeting, a per bag amount had not been determined.
Brennan also encouraged residents to get out and help clean up the town in any way they can.
“Every small bit counts,” he said. “It adds up to a great bit.”
