A woman who drove a Ford Focus into a wall of the Powerplex Recreation Facility on Crosbie Road early Sunday morning faces several charges.

The 26-year-old St. John’s woman — who was not identified by police in a Monday afternoon news release — faces charges of dangerous driving, failure to stop a motor vehicle, assault with a weapon, public mischief by falsely reporting an offence and breaching court orders.

After the incident, the woman was taken to hospital, and upon her release was taken into police custody, the RNC stated in the news release.

The investigation is ongoing, and the RNC is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash cam footage to contact police, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

UPDATE: Car crashes into wall after police chase in St. John's early Sunday morning

Woman sent to hospital with serious injuries

A violent crash through a brick wall sent a woman to hospital with serious injuries early Sunday morning.

The incident happened at about 2 a.m. after what started out as a police chase. The woman’s Ford Focus slammed into the front of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre on Crosbie Road. The visibly injured woman was removed from the car by firefighters and paramedics and taken to hospital by ambulance.

The whole front half of the car was left inside the building. At least 10 RNC cruisers and pickups were in the parking lot surrounding the crash scene when The Telegram arrived.

A witness who contacted The Telegram said he’d seen the car being pursued by several police vehicles on Topsail Road near Tim Hortons.

Other comments from the scene indicated the woman appeared to have already been injured before she crashed the car through the wall.

RNC Const. Geoff Higdon contacted The Telegram Sunday evening to state that there was no active police pursuit happening at the time of the crash. He said police started a pursuit following an incident in the city's west end but ended it in the interests of public safety. He said as the woman approached the area of Crosbie Road, a police car did begin to follow her vehicle, but there was no high-speed pursuit when the crash ocurred.

The woman’s condition was not known as of deadline.

Higdon said charges may be laid in connection to the incident. The police will provide an update Monday.
