An elderly pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle may have escaped even more serious injuries Friday night.

The driver of the SUV that struck her on Hamlyn Road ran into traffic waving his arms at a second oncoming car headed toward the victim who was lying prone on the wet and dark road. The second car came within about two meters of running over the injured woman.

The incident happened on Hamlyn Road in St. John’s near the Village Shopping Centre as the woman was crossing the road.

The male driver apparently struck the woman as he was swerving to avoid her and drove his vehicle onto the grass near the Village. He then left his vehicle to check on the victim when he saw the approaching vehicle.

The drivers of both vehicles tended to the woman until firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene.

She was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered serious.

The RNC is investigating.
