After a year and a half of planning, everything is in place for Come Home Year celebrations in St. Carol’s on the province’s Great Northern Peninsula.

Thanks to a dedicated committee of volunteers, their families, the community, local businesses and surrounding communities, the events that span nine days promise to be fun and memorable for both children and adults.

The celebrations run July 26-Aug. 3.

Support came through a Job Creation Partnership for $29,000 from the provincial government’s Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, according to Come Home Year committee president Joyce Richards. The money allowed the hiring of three workers for a 14-week period.

Richards credits the employees' hard work for getting everything ready.

While the workers were doing the manual labour, committee members have been busy with such things as preparing a Wall of Memory to honour deceased loved ones.

Richards said while those registered for festivities will take priority, even those who have not registered are welcome to attend.

The last Come Home Year was in 2008, she said, and again this year, grassroots support was key.

“The support of the community is a big factor. We wouldn’t be able to do it without them,” she said.
