The RNC say an incident where police surrounded an SUV Sunday night and detained three people stemmed from a report of a man being abducted.

After they received the report, they located the suspect vehicle in Kenmount Terrace where they detained the occupants and the man reported to have been in danger was deemed to be safe.

The man did, however, leave the area with police assistance.

The three people detained were released but the matter remains under investigation.

EARLIER STORY:

There was a large RNC presence in Kenmount Terrace Sunday night just before 8 p.m. as police surrounded a large SUV on the parking lot of St. Michael and All Angels church at the corner of Ladysmith Drive and Kiwanis Street.

A passerby told the Telegram that there were nearly a dozen police vehicles in the area and they were using a loudspeaker demanding that the occupants get out of the SUV. Police had also cordoned off the area of Kiwanis Street near Ladysmith Drive and shut down the Marie’s Mini Mart store and parking lot as they managed to the situation.

When the Telegram arrived on scene, Kiwanis Street had been reopened but seven police cars and trucks remained near the SUV in question. One officer could be seen searching the SUV and removing a baseball bat from inside.

At about 8:30 p.m. police released three people, two men and a woman, from the rear of three separate cruisers and removed their handcuffs. The three then walked to the SUV and drove away.

It’s not known what precipitated their detainment or if there were others detained during the incident.

More details will be provided as they become available.
