BURIN, N.L. — The sound of the flags flapping outside the town hall in Burin was the background noise to Remembrance Day ceremony held on Monday, Nov.11.
Power by the gusts of cold air, that moved swiftly over the municipal grounds, they stood at half-mast in honour of those who served.
Jeff Brushett was among those who gather at the cenotaph for the ceremony, he was there to lay a wreath in memory of his father George Brushett, who passed away Jan. 26, 2018 at the age of 98.
“When he was alive he always laid the wreath for the 59 Heavy Artillery, so it is my and my daughter's honour to lay (the wreath) in his memory as well.”
Brushett said that when his father was alive, he would often join him in laying a wreath for the artillery unit, “we have to remember the sacrifices that were made over the years, and our veterans-we need to support (by) buying the poppies-we just need to remember.”
Kevina Legge of Spanish Room also laid a wreath in honour her grandfather Clarence Hodder.
“He along with my Grandmother Edith were long-time active members of the (Royal Canadian) Legion,” she explained. “Both having passed I like to be present as they were for so many years.”
