BAY ROBERTS, N.L.

Police have confirmed that a woman is dead and another is in hospital with unknown injuries after a head-on collision between a school bus and an SUV on the Veterans Memorial Highway Thursday afternoon.

The deceased woman was the driver of the SUV. Her female passenger was sent to hospital.

About a dozen children were on the bus along with the driver and another staff member.

Police confirmed there was one child on the bus who received a superficial injury – meaning a scratch or a cut—but otherwise there were no injuries to anyone on the bus.

The highway is still closed but as of approximately 7:30 p.m. tow trucks were on scene, so police say it should be re-opened shortly.

A RCMP collision analyst was also on scene.
