Sisters Laura-lee Labour and Kathy Bolt turned a weekend camping trip in a gravel pit near Bay de L’eau into an opportunity to honour the memory of Nevaeh Denine by raising funds to donate to Nevaeh’s Lemonade Stand.
“We all have small kids, and we were touched to hear (Nevaeh’s story),” Labour said. “We wanted to do it in memory of her.”
They set-up the stand in an area near Old Bay de’L’eau Road where their campers are parked for the summer.
“It was a little bit of short notice, so I think next year if we’re still there camping that we’ll do it a little bit bigger,” she said.
Labour said they had several people come in for a glass of lemonade during their time at the stand.
“There was a guy (who) stopped in from Ontario (who) knew Nevaeh’s family,” Labour said. “He took a whole bunch of pictures to send her mom.”
She added that first the gentleman drove past the stand but turned around when he saw the purple and yellow balloons they had place on the highway in the area of the stand, the colours synonymous with Nevaeh’s Lemonade Stand.
“He came back and gave use a $20 donation, and then he started telling us how his friend lives two doors down from Neveah’s (mother) and that his friend’s daughter was best friends with her,” she said.
Labour said they collected $310 from the sale of lemonade and through donations.
“You don’t know which day it could be (for you),” she said.
Labour said that being a mother herself news of Nevaeh’s passing really touched home for her.
“You just want to give back.”
