ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — It could have been an explosive morning for a St. John’s resident on Saturday.
The man, who lives on East White Hills Road, was digging in his backyard and discovered what he thought was a Second World War mortar.
The digging quickly stopped and the resident called the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who responded to the scene with the explosive disposal unit.
The team removed the mortar without incident.
This marks several times in recent years the explosive disposal unit has been called into action, as mortars have been discovered in a number of locations. They have all been handled without incident.
