Back in early March, Cold Brook resident Thomas Hynes stated his displeasure about the jump in his garbage bill from the Town of Stephenville from $100 to $354 with no notification.

Now Mayor Tom Rose is saying that members of the town’s finance committee is willing to meet with residents of Cold Brook to see if together they can come to some kind of a mutual agreement.

The mayor confirmed that an increase had taken place for residents of Cold Brook and the community of Noel’s Pond but said the Town of Stephenville had no choice in imposing the hike based on the ratio of increase the town has to pay in regional tipping fees.

The Town of Stephenville also provides fire protection to those communities, both adjoining the towns’ boundaries.

Rose said after the regular general meeting of council on Thursday that the town administration and finance committee has already been looking at the numbers as it relates to the fees for delivering both these services and will be arranging a meeting in early May with the people of Cold Brook.

“We’ll listen to them and we’ll present our findings but one thing we cannot change is the fact there is a significant hike coming on July 1 for garbage tipping fees,” he said.

But Rose seemed confident that between them, they might be able to come up with a solution that would involve reducing the amount for the fees that was imposed in the March budget.
