BURIN, N.L.
Burin town council approved a recommendation from the town’s Planning and Development Committee that the municipality look into taking ownership of the wharf and property which had been used by the Canadian Coast Guard as a Search and Rescue lifeboat station.
The former facility closed around 2015. It was replaced by a new facility located up the road from the previous location near the entrance to the former fish plant in Burin.
Coun. Mary Myles, who was filling in for committee chairperson Everett Farwell, brought forward the recommendation during a regular meeting of council held Tuesday, Jan. 15.
“The committee is recommending that the town seek approval from Municipal Affairs to assume ownership once the wharf has been brought up to an acceptable level,” explained Myles.
Town manager Leo Hartson told The Southern Gazette on Wednesday, Jan. 16 that the town is looking into future development of the area.
“It would be Part II of the Heritage Square Revitalization Project that would include the proposal of some floating docks for pleasure crafts,” he said.
