Newfoundlanders and Labradorians might want to double check the tags on some bread products in their kitchens following a recall related to glass possibly being found inside the bags.
The recall was issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Jan. 4 and is labeled as a Class 2 hazard, which means “the use of, or exposure to, a product may cause temporary adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
As a precautionary measure, Bimbo Canada, owners of Canada Bread, says it voluntarily conducted the recall of sliced bread produced at its St. John's facility and sold at various retailers and food service partners througout the province. All the products were removed from store shelves on Dec. 27.
"Consumers are our first priority and we have taken all necessary steps to mitigate any potential risk and to eliminate further occurrences," a spokesperson for Bimbo wrote in a statement. "We halted production at our St. John's facility and resolved the issue immediately. We have also reviewed Good Manufacturing Practices with all our associates at dedicated meetings."
The full list of 30 affected products includes the brands Ben’s, Dempster’s, Golden, Butternut, Compliments, Great Value, Sunshine and Villaggio. The affected products are loaves of sliced bread with best before dates of Jan 4, Jan 7, Jan 8 and Jan 10, 2019.
To determine if your bread products are included, check the code on the tag to see if it matches those listed on the CFIA website.
