CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Threats to shoot up a school in western N.L. school with an AK-47 assault rifle have resulted in the conviction of a teenage boy.

The boy, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was convicted Sept. 12 in provincial court in Corner Brook on charges of uttering threats and extortion.

The written decision released by Judge Wayne Gorman does not give the age of the boy, where he lives, or the name of the school.

Gorman’s decision wrote the incident for which the boy was charged occurred at Marble Mountain in February.

A number of teens were sitting at a table in the ski lodge when the boy and his friend approached them.

The boy used a cellphone belonging to one of the teens to call another teenager, who allegedly owed him money because he had damaged a vape belonging to the boy.

It’s during that call the threats were made to beat up the teen and bring an AK-47 to the school to do harm to people there.

A number of the teenagers present at the ski lodge testified at the trial the boy did make the phone call and they heard his threats.

The boy’s trial took place over three days on June 27, July 29 and Sept. 4.

In his decision, Gorman said the Crown had proven beyond a reasonable doubt the boy had committed the offences.

While there may have been some contradictions between descriptions of the events by the witnesses, Gorman said there was significant consistency with regard to the important events.

The boy will be sentenced next month.
