Bay of Islander Rick Crane of Cox’s Cove and Northern Peninsula fisher Conway Caines out of Cow Head are stars in their own right as licensed ocean harvesters, televised “Saltwater Cowboys,” and now — pirates.

Imagined reality only, we must suppose. Celebrities and local ambassadors. Enterprising lads, no doubts, me hearties!

You can see their latest antics online, promoters and players for global gaming giant X-Box, noted television stars in remix from their place of birth, that big sea of Newfoundland and Labrador talent, where celebs of legacy, life and lightheartness are followable through X-Box Canada.

Pirates, and pensions. All the way to the bank.

Upcoming events

Public health and safety takes another place in the spotlight in the near future as hometown McIvers Fire and Rescue, the town’s volunteer fire brigade, breaks out its new fire pumper engine, the department’s lone new service in four decades.

No date has yet been announced, but McIvers Volunteer Fire Department’s new chief, Peter Sheppard, and his 22-member contingent are making ready for the official unveiling one spring day soon.

Memorial tourney set

The seventh annual Janelle Blanchard Memorial Volleyball Tournament is an open and friendly 20-team competition set for April 27-28.

Proceeds from the event supports the Janelle Blanchard Memorial Scholarship Fund honouring the life and times of the varsity athlete and community volunteer who died young.

She was the daughter of Lori and Richard Blanchard, sister to Gabrielle, who lost a surprise battle with cancer in 2011.

The mixed 4-on-4 tourney will be again held at Janelle’s old alma mater — inside Templeton Academy’s Tigers Den, the regional all-grade school’s gymnasium — in Meadows.

Event organizers are Fabian and Lorna Lovell. Registration is currently being accepted at the tournament’s group page on Facebook.
