EDITORIAL: Enjoy the warmth while it's around

OK, so far this spring and summer provinces west of us have been experiencing some heatwave activity.
We have not.
Newfoundland and Labrador is finally getting some temperatures in the 20’s and it possibly hit the low 30’s in some places in the past few weeks.
Compared to others, who have been in the 30’s and with added humidity in the 40’s, we’ve actually been fortunate.
In Quebec, the heat has been blamed for a number of deaths, some of them while people in this province still feared frostbite.
Well, at least they had to continue to cover up plants or take them indoors in mid to late June for fear of them freezing.
While the nights are finally getting temperatures without frost warnings, the temperatures are still in the single digits or low double digits at night – which makes it more comfortable for sleeping and something that’s the envy of our friends and family in mainland provinces.
Even with the sparse few days that the temperatures rise here in Newfoundland, people are still quick to complain about the heat.
With the wait that we had for it (the heat) to come, nobody should complain when it does, even if it brings June bugs, ants, mosquitos and other summertime pests.
Nobody is looking for temperatures like they are experiencing in provinces west of us, but people in this province would like to see them in the mid to high 20’s, just so those who like to take advantage of a swim in a pond or some type of stream can do so.
It’s also nice to be in a park or a cabin where you don’t have to be stoking up a stove or a furnace to keep warm in the night.
There are no thermostats to control the great outdoors, so pretty well whatever is thrown our way, we have to contend with and as summer wears on, its hoped that will involve some heat and sunshine.
The thing is with such short summers in this province people need to adapt to whatever comes and make the best of it while it’s warm, no matter if that involves sunshine or rain.
Get outdoors and enjoy yourself while the temperatures are suitable.
