By way of this letter members of the Marystown Shipyard Families Alliance are hoping to disperse some false information that has been circulating in our community and especially among workers from the former Marystown shipyard.

It appears that the general consensus is that sick/injured workers from the former Marystown shipyard, whose claims of occupational disease are represented by our group before WorkplaceNL, would be required to pay our former legal advisor, Ches Crosbie, 25 per cent of any monetary compensation.

For the record, since 2014 and up until he entered politics two years ago, Ches Crosbie represented our committee Pro Bono — for the public good and professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment. Crosbie has no fee agreement with our group or any member of our group, and is not even a practicing member of the law society now.

Anything contrary to this is false.

The Marystown Shipyard Families Alliance committee (2006) is a volunteer group and receives no funding from any other group or organization. To date, the Marystown Shipyard Families Alliance represents over 100 claims of occupational disease and at no cost to the injured workers or their families.
