Dear editor,

The Kiwanis Club of Grand Falls-Windsor has reached a crossroads, whereby we are having to contend with a declining membership which is forcing us to consider whether or not we will need to disband the club as we head into our 53rd year.

As you can appreciate this is not a decision that we take lightly, given the club's extensive history in the community and the importance of our youth programs. We felt that we should therefore do our utmost to secure some renewed support for the club and the youth programs which we support with an organized membership drive.

Our first step was to reach out to as many of our past and present members as possible and now we are kindly asking our fellow residents of central Newfoundland to consider joining Kiwanis to help the youth of our community. By all means, please feel free to encourage others who you feel would also be interested in serving.
We are also taking steps to make it easier for people to serve, such as reducing our luncheons to just one every other Tuesday, limiting our fundraising activities to one event per year and encouraging others to bring forward new ideas which may help us to move forward in a positive way.

If even 15 people could be encouraged to join, we will be able to continue to support critical youth initiatives such as the 1916 Beaumont Hamel Royal Canadian Army Cadets, the School Breakfast Program at Sprucewood Academy and the Central Newfoundland Kiwanis Music Festival.

Our next luncheon will be held 12 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Mount Peyton Hotel and we welcome all those interested in coming along to get a sense of what takes place at one of our luncheons. If you are interested in joining us, please feel free to reach to myself via email at, [email protected], or by phone at 489-7012, as well as any other member of our club who you know.

Lawrence Ducey, president

Kiwanis Club of Grand Falls-Windsor
